Prowler/JProwler

Prowler and JProwler simulate the radio transmission/propagation/reception, including collisions in ad-hoc radio networks, and the operation of the MAC-layer. Any application can be implemented on any number of motes. The radio definitions (propagation and MAC-layer) and the applications are plug-ins providing easy extensibility.

The event-drive simulator can be set to deterministic operation mode (to produce replicable results while testing the application) as well as to probabilistic operation mode that simulates the nondeterministic nature of the communication channel and the low-level communication protocol of the motes. The signal strength from the transmitter to a receiver is determined by a deterministic propagation function (modeling the decay of signal strength with distance), and by random disturbances (modeling the fading effect, the time-varying nature of the signal strength, and other miscellaneous transmission errors.)

Prowler runs under MATLAB, thus it provides a fast and easy way to prototype applications, and has nice visualization capabilities. JProwler is implemented in Java, but otherwise provides the same capabilities as Prowler.
